Here’s a massive list of IRC channels from most of the popular private BitTorrent sites. Similar posts have made their rounds throughout the BitTorrent scene — we’ve cleaned it up by updating the links and by adding new IRC channels; and we’ve also tested them to make sure they work. To make it even more handy, we’ve made the links “clickable” so you can launch IRC right from these links, without having to do all that cut/paste nonsense.

IRC Tips & Channel Options
**Invite-only IRC:
**
The scenario: You have an account at a particular tracker, but you get a message “Can’t Join Channel - It’s Invite Only”. To join, you’ll need to use two things — 1. Your username on the tracker. — 2. Your passkey (not your password). The passkey can be found in two places:
A: **In a torrent
** — (µTorrent). Assuming you are presently downloading or seeding, open µTorrent, and browse to a torrent that is using that particular tracker. The example shown below is a passkey for a FunFile torrent:
B: **In your account
** — Browse your profile on the private site, and look for where it says “passkey”. However, not all sites will show it. If not, simply download a new torrent and go to A: above.
Now that you have your passkey, connect to the proper ’server’ in IRC and type this in the status window: (Note that “/Funfile” represents the desired channel name - i.e. #Funfile).
/Funfile !invite (username from site
) (32-digit passkey
)
Example:
/Funfile !invite sharky1234

In many cases, tracker members will have to register with the IRC channel in order to use key features, such as getting help from online siteops. It’s recommended to use the same “nick” and email that you used when you signed up with the tracker.
After you connect to the server type this to change your nick:
/nick (Your Nick
)
Example:
/nick sharky1234
(you can do the above in either the open channel window or in the IRC status window once connected).
Once you’ve changed your nick, you’ll need to register with the IRC channel:
/ns register (password
) (your email address
)
Example:
/ns register 4321aabbcc
whoever@wherever.comNOTE: The IRC channel may still not let you in, and they may send you a special passcode to the supplied email address. Check your email, copy the passcode and add it to a message, like this:
/msg NickServ confirm (passcode)
After registering, you may need to identify your nick, you have to type this:
/ns identify (password)
Example:
/ns identify 4321aabbcc
**Other useful commands
**:
GHOST — If you are disconnected or someone else is using your nick, you may have a “ghost”. To get rid of this ghost, type:
/ns ghost (Your Nick) (password)
To RECOVER your nickname if it’s in use type:
/ns recover nick password
INFO — Information on a nickname:
This command shows information on a registered user, the date and time the nickname was registered, if the user is online or the last seen time the user was on. Here’s how:
/ns info (add nick here)
Email Address — To change your Email address for a registered nick, type:
/ns set email (newEmailAddress)
Example:
/ns set email whoever@wherever.com
High Protect — To set High Protect on your nickname so no-one else can use it type:
/ns set protect high
You will need to identify to your nick before changing to it, simply type:
/ns identify (Your Nick) (Your Password)
to remove type /ns set protect normal
Change Password — To change your password type:
/ns set passwd (new password here)
Note that it is “passwd” not password and always do any commands involving a password in your status page, if possible.
Set Quote — This function allows a user to add information to his/her registered nickname. To set this function, type:
/quote set (Your Nick) location (Your Location)
Private Trackers & New Security
Many new trackers (especially Gazelle trackers,
such as What.cd) require that users enter in their own “IRC Password”
(or IRC key) in their account profile (at the tracker) before being able
to join/connect to the tracker’s IRC channel. In your “Edit” profile you
can make the IRC key needed to join the channel, this is a security
measure to keep both the site and the channel safe. Your IRC key
should have a safe password, meaning a mix of upper case and lower case
letters and some random numbers, eg. 2gT47HHyRw8k876. An unsafe password
is your profile name.

Now that people have your passkey for funfile, they can probably mess with it. Some trackers update ratios through passkeys, so someone can edit your passkey into their torrent file and make hit and run while you suffer the consequences. Not entirely positive about this, but I figure it would’ve been safer to either create some random passkey or censor it.

I’ve painfully changed every single passkey in all the screenshots I’ve done throughout all my posts - none of the passkeys will work - I stake my life on it. Photoshop is a wonderful thing - I use the “Free Transform” feature. For example, if you look at the FunFile passkey up above in the image; there’s only 29 characters. Normal passkeys have 32.

The example under that one is not a screenshot - it’s just a simple cut/paste from Notepad (much easier to change it there than in an image capture). To ‘generate’ that one I simply closed my eyes, and hit the keyboard 32 times, being sure to hit some numbers along the way.
