FunFile Fail; Spinoff Sites That Are Good For BitTorrent

We could only speculate on the future for FunFile.org, albeit it would appear somewhat dim. Absentee ownership; the last-minute cancellation of the highly-anticipated CDN, squandered funds, and the recent mutiny (and not-so-recent) of members & staff departures alike, have at the very least, spurned some incredible new private trackers - overall, this is good news for the BitTorrent community.

One thing that FunFile has taught us is that we shouldn’t feel bullied into donating to a private tracker. As a torrenter, it is not your job to assure that the site is properly monetized. The alternative is to just go elsewhere. Which is exactly what these ex-FunFile staff members & uploaders did, by starting up their own private trackers.

and other FunFile staffers decided it was time to spread their wings in the wake of allegations over mishandled funds and a general lack of communication with the owner. PreToMe was born; the first official FunFile spinoff site. Since then, PreToMe has shown a substantial growth in members, number of torrents, and traffic.

PreToMe… At A Glance

— Tracker Type: 0day/general tracker.
— Adult Torrents? - Yes, but set to “Off” by default. Users will need to put a checkmark to Allow Adult Content
in their profile.
— SeedBonus - PreToMe uses a credit (SeedBonus) system, whereby credits are awarded for seeding criteria (upload speed and time-based). Credits can be used to gamble in the casino, request torrents, pay off HnRs, buy VIP status, purchase upload GBs, buy invites, get a webmail account, and several other useful things. You can get credits by seeding torrents you download, donating, winning in the casino, uploading torrents (if you are an approved uploader) or idling in their main IRC channel, #pretome, for which you will receive .5 credit per hour.
— Slots - New members have just two concurrent download slots. However, all new members start out with 100 credits, in which additional download slots can be purchased (the first one costs just 25 credits, all others are 250 credits).
— Download speeds - Recently, speeds have improved drastically. DL speeds in our tests are usually between 300 and 600 KB/s (on a 1.0 MB connection).
— Pre-Times - Very fast. TV release pretimes are usually between 1 and 4 minutes. Movies; anywhere from minutes to hours.
— Ratio-free? Essentially, PreToMe is a ratio-free tracker, as there’s no global (overall) ratio. The seed rules comprise of seeding a torrent for 60 hours or attain a 0.75 ratio on the torrent. Failure to meet one of these criteria will result in a Hit & Run.

The Iota Project

TheIotaProject.org (TiP) is another tracker from ex-FunFile staff members, started back in late November of 2008. Most of the top staff at TiP were FF staff at one point or another, dating all the way back to FF’s origins.

Almost everything at TheIotaProject is considered ’scene’ or ‘P2P’ releases, and members are not directly allowed to upload torrents. Currently there’s 1,600 members at TiP, sharing over 200 active torrents. Registration is currently open:

SceneRace.net

When FunFile recently banned 3 of its major uploaders, we’re guessing that FF didn’t think they’d go on to start up their own tracker. Well, that’s exactly what they did. While SceneRace.net has only been online for a few days, they’ve already signed up an impressive 718 people to the tracker. Registration is currently open:

SceneRace Quote: “…everyone hates a site that moans about money… especially one that hides where that money goes.”

As you may have guessed from the name, ScR is a 0day scene tracker. Pretimes are announced under each torrent listing, and currently all torrents are freeleech. We don’t suspect they’ll have a difficult time finding uploaders, as they’ve added 50 new torrents in the past 36 hours alone. SceneRace uses What.cd’s ever-popular Gazelle codebase, and there’s even talk of it becoming a ratio-free tracker.

SceneRace vs. FunFile

The following is SceneRace’s side of the story as to why the FunFile uploaders were banned:

braidN got in a personal conflict with another Funfile Uploader named spankkie inside of their IRC channel “thedome”… fully established as an almost entirely rule-less channel. It got dirty fast, and braidN reported to (another tracker) staff that spankkie was stealing their torrents (since he was) and spankkie a warning (afaik a verbal warning, not even the site mark thing). spankkie ran crying to FF’s staff, and Funfile banned braidN, Camedwardo, and spaceship9. The latter 2 were officially banned simply for being associated with braidN.

braidN was accused of lying to FF staff and covering up that he reported spankkie, a classic screwed-if-you-do [tell the truth], screwed-if-you-don’t [tell the truth] situation. FF threatened to report him to other sites for “stealing content” even though he has gained FTP access in recent times. FF likes to claim they wouldn’t have banned him if he told the truth, but everyone knows that he’d have been banned either way.

Ban reason for us is “troublemakers and abusers.”, so our theory is they’re just using the braidN situation as an excuse to ban us since we were quite outspoken against l0ckd0wn and the general CDN topic. We collectively started an uploaders strike with the other scene content uploaders when the CDN date was passed in December which lasted several days, until staff were forced to start uploading. spankkie was initially part of the strike but returned to uploading from staff “pressure”. Since then pretty much all the fast uploaders have left Funfile. braidN started uploading again about a week before the bans happened, but other then him spankkie was practically the only remaining non-staff scene content uploader on FF.

No rules were ever broken by anyone on our side of the battle (something even several of the less corrupt staff have admitted to us), and we’ve never been charged of any crimes.

And yeah that Pretome key will work till the 22nd January 2009 for an unlimited number of users (unless the user limit is reached before that). It was given by floxxx (PTM admin) to Filenetworks blog about a month back.

A couple additional things to ScR that weren’t mentioned and we feel are worth mentioning:
-5000 user limit, and only open reg for the first month (We’ll close and give everyone 10 invites at that point)

-No single “site owner”. We have 3 siteops, to model a sort of triumvirate government instead of the standard monarchy/”tyranny” to achieve greater fairness and site->staff communications

-Pretimes are fairly slow right now because of the US economy, ie lack of money to spend on dedicated seedboxes… not because we don’t have access

May I point out that BraidN was working with Lockd0wn, and was about to start a competition with l0ck in which he was giving away one of his seedboxes. BraidN did have a disagreement with another member, then decided to dog him at another tracker for doing exactly what he does. Don’t forget to mention, theiotaproject was started by banned staff who planned to get rid of the active sysop’s at funfile to make it “better” for the members this was a few months before the actual site (TiP) started.

Scenerace.net was started before braidn, spaceship9 and camedwardo were banned (may of been only a day between their site going up and them being banned). But these “AWESOME UPLOADERS” were not so awesome when they rebelled back when the owner promised the CDN at funfile be active by a specific time and date. These guys rebelled in the best way possible, graffiting the site’s last uploaded torrent posters with the words “0wn3d” and also refusing to upload torrents.

Current statistics taken from funfile.org:
Camedwardo: last upload: 2008-12-31 06:58:12 - (2 weeks ago)
Spaceship9: last upload: 2009-01-05 03:14:02 - (1 week ago)
Braidn: last upload: 2009-01-07 22:16:45 - (5 days ago)

camedwardo and spaceship9 were only uploading torrents mainly which no-one would’ve wanted, braidn did come back to uploading until he pulled the last straw on running his mouth on the site. Then banned.

Luckeychild also a staff member on scenerace.net has been banned due to inviting back braidn which he knew that he was banned from our site currently.

So if this whole article were true, You would know the facts. Not the lies.

Oh if you want to know, braidn is also known as surfzup on many other sites, this user also “stole” torrents from the GFT, what a hypocrite.

Also, what about thetorrentsource.org ? This is also a spin-off site that is still running.

As far as braidN’s personal conflict with spankkie:

FunFile isn’t going anywhere. It is a great site, with great members, and a great staff. Like any other site, it has its ups and downs and it is during these times that the FunFile community grows even stronger.

I have no ill feelings towards ScR, or the people behind it. I wish them the best of luck in their new endeavor. I am, however, a little disappointed in their recent actions and hope they can turn it into a learning experience.

2. Torrents in so called graffiti were all genuine torrents that were replaced with proper posters and well seeded afterwards. A point needed to be made. This act did not violate any site rules nor cause harm to the site in any way.
3. The uploader strike was supported by several OTHER uploaders who have since left/gone inactive. It was designed to, and sucessfully did, create pressure on the staff and create community awareness of what was going on with the CDN. Uploaders are voluntary anyway, and no rule states a certain number of uploads per day, and the uploaders notified others of the strike but did not force it upon them. Pretty Gandhi like, eh? This act did not violate any site rules nor cause harm to the site in any way.
3. Scenerace was in the works as an exclusive internal project started upwards a month before this incident, and was never planned for release. This incident caused the early maturation of Scenerace into a tracker rather then the previous private dev project. I was under the assumption that there was nothing wrong with trying to start your own if you could do better then the original, turns out we were incorrect by funfile’s standards. This act did not violate any site rules nor cause harm to the site in any way.
4. Banned for over three days, winter break in TV… do math good sir, it was hardly possible for us to upload anymore.
5. Staff pressured us to upload torrents when none were available. Demand for a product that doesn’t exist means less products will come. In this case, crappy torrents no one wanted. This act did not violate any site rules nor cause harm to the site in any way.
6. braidN/surfzup has means of getting files which even FF staff have come to him asking for access to/cost of. Membership on faster torrent sites does not = stealing torrents, though I’m sure that is a new concept for many on slower trackers

and yup, TiP is actually a TTS spinoff, not funfile
some Funfile staff tried to overthrow the regime, got thwarted, ran to TTS. idk what happened there, but then they left to form their own site. would make a [boring] soap, no?

Doubt it. If someone gets in a fight in a clearly rule-less environemnt, it’s at their own peril. We’d try to mediate an agreement between sites, and maybe warn the user depending on what happened, but if something is self-governed then it’s at the users own peril they enter and start an argument.

on funfile, it seems the staff that knows less about the “happenings” seem to be less corrupt in most instances.
calling on less corrupt staff does not mean all are corrupt, nor that all were even there.
and FLS are not staff. Apparently they’re volunteer support. mods/”admins” are the lowest staff according to what I was told as FLS there.

ScR was originally conceived as a simply “Gazelle Fullymodded” tracker by me in private… then grew as an idea for an internal tracker for a seedbox network. you realize funfile has over a dozen uploaders right? and a couple months ago, they had way more scene uploaders. I even recall a certain someone who was doing <1minute releases to FF.
What happened to them? They got driven off. By what? The very same thing that drives this regardless of what anyone wants to imagine.
This became a serious matter because FF has driven away so many, spankkie remained practically THE ONLY scene content re-redistributer for Funfile.

Besides, every uploader has multiple sources. getting spankkie off a site braidN liked didn’t inconvenience spankkie.. It inconveniences you.

doing exactly what he does himslelf. This compromises FunFiles
ability to provide quality releases (which it has been dong for the
past few months, regardless of BraidN saying he was on strike, he is
a liar and continued to up quality releases, stolen from various
scene trackers). This is all very hypocritical. The reason that this
page has gone crazy is because a little 19 year old child decided
that he could do the wrong thing, and blame others for it. Then hide
when it is revealed that he is a dog.

People can protect who they will, the real story will surface soon
enough.

I aint got a problem with you borley. My prob, and alot of others
prob is with BraidN. Its not that I dont like the guy, quite

I dont think I am taking it way too far BraidN. I, like alot of
people are aware of the issues that FunFile is having. I aint in a
position, like staff, FLS, op, nothing like that, but I do use the
tracker, and the people there are awesome. I like being on FunFile
regardless of who is running the show. And good for you going and
making your own tracker with your mates. I just think, regardless of
whether or not I am there, that you need to straighten this out.

I must make clear,  
 TiP is not a spinoff of TTS, sorry but I was asked by the owner to
help out there, while I was at ff, I turned it down to start with as
I was told that as soon as job related classes was over I would be
re-instated back to sysop for ff, after a month I saw it not
happening at all. So I went to help a friend the owner of TTS. Now I
have been at this a very very long time, and have been asked to
start my own site forever, I put it off because frankly I did not
want the crap that an owner has to put up with for the politics
games, threats, and all the other fun stuff that goes with a
tracker. When I did make the choice to go with a new site I am
shocked at how many friends came to join, also how many of the
trouble makers that have been run off from the other sites mentioned
here, The 2 things that I am most proud of is the friends that have
offered their advice, support and encouragement, as well as the huge
number of people from aradi tracker that have joined us as staff,
and radio and uploaders.  
 Now to Borley, L0ck, and the other owners that were friends before,
they are still friends and I talk to many site owners every day, To
those that have helped define our site and share our vision then
welcome, to the distractors and malcontents, sorry we can not be all
things to all people, not our intention to be. We are working to
build a solid core and we have always and will always continue to
offer a welcome place for other site owners, and to all members of
the torrent world. See I am not so stupid to believe that any user
out there is using just 1 torrent site, hell I don’t! But if we can
offer them a another choice with as was quoted before “Original” ff
staff and some of the great staff from aradi then thats better for
us, our users and the torrent world. All the fighting bickering and
arguing from members of the torrent world only divides us and makes
us all look like asses, Now if you belong to ff, or tts, or ptm, and
decide not to belong to TiP then I have no issue with that, no more
then I will be upset if you drive a ford and I drive a chevy, again
its not needed.  
 I will share a piece of advice I got, from an owner a couple years
ago, he will be pissed but I think it needs to be stated here, “I do
not have all the answers, I try to do the best I can with the advice
and information I have at the time, sometimes it works, and other

The way yousuck has been behaving really says a lot about him. He
basically tries to bully people to create fights over anbd over
again. Typically this is never against people that he percieves are
well liked but rather people that he sees as weak. He repeatedly
makes claims to being strong and a “man” which means he doesn’t feel
these things at all within himself.

He was the only player here who wasn’t directly involved IE. he had
nothing to do with what happened. Yet this didn’t stop him and of
course he wasn’t prepared to listen to anyone.

He has an exaggerated sense of self-importance which very few people
display: he repeatedly tries tell people what to do although he has
no actual authority and gets angry when they fail to take notice of
him as if he isn’t important and has no authority: which is actually

Several members on the IRC channel have sent me copies of PM he sent
claiming that staff are going to ban people over this which isn’t
true as he is making it up to feel important within himself by
telling others what to do. When he was told publicly to cease doing
this by someone in authority he did left the channel and immediately
started talking in #thedome very angrily.

He claims to possess a level of intelligence and maturity that
others do not have whilst bullying them; however, not smart enough
to realise that only he is behaving in this manner for much of the
time and that he consistently displays this behaviour. In other
words he fails to see that much of the time he is the only one doing
this and therefore there is something wrong with his behavior and
not others.

He also makes accusations about others wrongdoing with very little
evidence: this is a sign of believing he is more intelligent than
other people: since (in his mind) he is more intelligent than others
he can:

1\. See what others cannot - for example, this past few hours he has
been accusing people of operating relays between IRC channels at
funfile and sceneracer. Whilst there was at least one relay he
accused multiple people of operating it despite staff verifying that
people were indeed not operating a relay - yousuck kept on insisting
that the very same people were operating it still

2\. Not be wrong: admitting he is wrong and fallible would mean that
his delusion that he is more intelligent than others is false. In
order that the delusion is maintained he ignores facts and reality
that he is wrong and of course never, ever admits that he is wrong.

Most people are grounded enough and have a level of self-esteem that
allows them to admit that they make mistakes. Most people will not
make claims that they are masculine than others, especially not true
alpha male types. Most people recognise their own behaviour as
flawed and fix it. Most people do not start fights for attention.
Most people do not look to people they percieve as weak and
mercilessly bully them. Most people will not repeatedly claim a high
level of maturity or imply that they are more mature than others
repeatedly.

He is immature, craves attention and will be absolutley ruthless in
going about getting it. Unfortuately for him in order to maintain
his own illusion that he is smarter than anyone else to cover up his
inadequate self-image he seems incapable of taking advice from
anyone: allies or enemies (as he is smarter than them all so how
could his course of action be wrong?) on rectifying this. Time and
time again his friends and neutral parties, including myself, have
asked him to change his behaviour to no avail He demonstrates an
amazing lack of ability to control his own impulses to cover up his
sense of self-loathing.

Ironically he craves being a staff member: he has begged repeatedly
to be promoted to staff. He is perhaps teh exact opposite of what a
staff member should be, most notably because he possesses almost no
impulse control combined with an exaggerated sense of his own
imprortance over other people but also because he cannot control his
impulse to bully people. The great thing about this is that he is so
transparent that he will never be considered for a position of
authority

Why am I writing this: essentially I’m getting sick and tired of him
- he’s a immature twit: I predict that he will be banned at some
point for his personality faults that I have mentioned. He’s on thin
ice at present and of course will be extremely indignant if he gets
banned because, due to his sense of self-importance, he will believe
that he was merely helping out staff and that of course his help was
warranted because others couldn’t see what he sees.

even if they are a member of tip. Only certain ones that got banned

Right now we are invite only! yes we hit our limit and closed our

Also note most of the ones who started our site all came from

other trackers, FunFile is my home, and I love the people there. I
have only ever been banned from one tracker, and that was going back
a few years ago when I was unable to seed back what I had
downloaded, because I was new to the tracker scene. The site that I
have been a member longest is FunFile, on and off since before
L0ckd0wn was running the show. The only other accounts that I would
have had that were disable would have purely been due to inactivity,
or that one that was due to my ratio.

As far as all the above apart from the pointless ramblings in
comments, what brings someone to a tracker is content. The members
are a bonus as well. The people at FunFile are fucking awesome, I
love fucking with them, and just getting up to shit with them. There
is good content there as well. Forget who runs the show, at the end
of the day, a trackers is its members. What best determines their
dynamics is how they treat situations like these. Yep, FunFile has
gone through alot of shit over the past few months, years, whatever,
but there is a good dynamic, because it is a minority of members
that speak out about L0ckd0wn, and bitch about other issues (myself
included at times). FunFile has an awesome Dynamic. Whatever in the
end, if youre gonna leave FunFile (like I have contemplated many
times before) because of L0ck, youre weak. If youre gonna ruin a
good dynamic because of L0ck, youre weak.  
 Trackers have rules in place to protect that dynamic, some hard,
others not so. At the end of the day, they work, and that is why
they are in place. If I break a rule, I am accountable, dunno, I am
just that kinda guy. I admit fault when I know I am wrong. There is
no such thing as ‘But what about him, but they did this!!’, I fucked
up, so I am accountable. I expect others to have this kind of
honesty. It will make a man of you.

Sorry about how long this is, its the last I have to say about this
issue completely. Dont believe that this is me because of the fakers
above. I joined FunFile on 2008-07-23 09:00:34 (25 weeks ago),
Pretome on 2008-11-26 02:19:28 (1 month, 3 weeks and 1 day ago), I
have a ratio of 1.223. was higher, but I sold some ratio a few days
ago.

it’s had plenty of lies and deceits and scams from it’s owner
lockdown and it’s lost a lot of credibility and trust and faith from
the members but at the end of the day, FF is the site with the best
community, the most downloaded content, most traffic, most users
active etc.. If non-biased people had a choice of getting X file
from all the trackers, they would go to FF first. Put aside your
stubborness and ignorance and you’ll see for yourself. FF is not
perfect, far from it and so many things have been promised that
never happened like server move and CDN and so on but, if you forget
that part, don’t donate and just be a normal user, FF is by far the
best place to be, in terms of torrents and community. Whether it’s
the IRC or the forums or the dome or the amazing staff (except
lockdown) that are always there to help. It’s just THE place to be
right now.

PTM follows with close second, while being an FF rip-off, it does
actually do things slightly better, it’s a faster site with more
functionality, usually better pre times but lacks in many key areas.
Primarily community! There is none! Beyond that band of 10-20 or so
‘friends’, there’s not really much else. Look at the recent browse
page, it’s so empty, no one downloading, no one to seed to. They
have a huge amount of torrents and large amount of registered users
but … Where are they??? At FunFile of course! It’s just a better
experience at FF to download and seed than anywhere else. (Of course
comparing with these listed here not infinitely better sites like
ScT/SCC/TL/GFT etc…). PTM is lacking a lot in the community side
which doesnt make it a welcome place to be and simply adding
thousands more users doesnt help when they’re all inactive!

TheTorrentSource (mpegdistro’s) is basically a shit hole. I’m sorry
but it’s fucking ugly, plain, basic, empty, no content, no community
and just a half-assed attempt at a site which, evidently, no one
wants or cares about. Proof is in the pudding.

TheIOTAProject I can’t comment on because not a member and can’t
register due to SQL error “in
/home/www-STABLE/public\_html/takesignup.php, line 170″. So no clue.

Now SceneRace, well, it’s a nice themed site but not user friendly
at all. Just look at the torrents page, it’s so cluttered and
monotone that doesnt encourage you to use. Content is so-so,
pretimes are alright but it’s very selective at the moment. Possibly
because it’s new, I’m sure if they iron out the kinks and improve
over time plus draw bigger userbase, they can be turned into a large
successful tracker. However, are they capable of doing so, the 3
main guys from FF? Well, we’ll see I guess but it feels like it wont
last long. First govt complaint and they’ll be sent packing but
let’s see!

But all in all, it doesnt matter what I think does it? Neither does
your opinion matter, you who’s still reading this crap for whatever
reason. It doesnt matter. What matters is what the community wants
and where the community wants to be. FunFile is a name brand in the
torrent world, indeed reputation selfishly tarnished by the bastard
who owns the site but in all other aspects, from content to staff to
community, it just trumps the rest regardless of what you think, the
community shows it day to day.

Also, who cares if lockdown is making money off FF, every single
tracker does, even these new ones that sprouted will eventually turn
into money-hungry business operations. Heck, take SceneRace’s
example, those 3 started a reselling “company” for seedboxes to make
extra bucks reselling slots on seedboxes to pay for their own usage.
You really think they’re not in this for the money? Or you think PTM
is not targeted at making money once it gets popular (IF!)?

But you know what, so fucking what! These people risk their
real-life identities and lives and spend shitloads of time and
effort making a home where we all bugger off to leech and enjoy.
They wanna make money? Go ahead! Why fucking not! They’re the clever
ones making most use of the situation and it’s down to us, the
members, to be clever and donate or not donate as we see fit.

Heck, if running FunFile like a business ensures that it stays alive

Look, I agree that heckling for donations is a bit much, but I
donated well before these messages were frequent, and I add that it
