HDBits Invites Cancelled, as Sellers Get the Jump
December 18, 09 by sharky 11,761 viewsOfficial news from HDBits now confirms that a recent announcement for a 24-hour open-invite slated for this Monday has been shelved for the time being, if not indefinitely. Certainly this is bad news for those on the outside looking in, but as a whole, the HDBits community is supportive of the decision. So, what caused the rollback of the invites? Simply for the exact same reason that the invitation system was disabled exactly one year ago to this day - invite sellers trying to make a quick buck.

In contrast to what one asshat posted in the original article, HDBits.org did not opt to shut down invites on the 17th, as seen in this fake screenshot below.

However, it may have been a premonition to how things went along, as these undisclosed sites are offering HDBits invites for sale - as high as $50 USD each.

(The shot above reflects "Out of Stock" although this was at "4 available" just yesterday) on an undisclosed site. Seems they’ve updated the news.
HDBits on eBay? Current attempts to find HDBits invites on eBay were nil, no matter how searches were conducted. Old listings for HDBits on eBay suggest prices as high as $150 each.
Torrent Forum Requests:
Requests are busy on forums; people were quickly filling up slots and/or reserving their invite ticket (mostly through private PM).

But not all torrent forums are cool with just requests….

Last Notes:
HDBits, don’t blame blogs or torrent forums for exposing this info originally, and thus unintentionally promoting a new-found interest in sales of HDBits invites. The news was published on your index page, and thus it spread like wildfire - what did you expect? Take a lesson from other trackers — what HDBits needs to do is to incorporate a pay2invite system (SCC; ScT-RIP) - this is the only way you’ll be able to control the number of invites being sent out, while at the same time generating revenue to keep this great tracker well-monetized. You’ll have more donators than you can keep up with, while trimming out most invite sellers. Problem solved.
HDBits, what’s it gonna be? You’re in the spotlight, and you want new members. There’s been a years’ worth of private tracker peeps that have never had an option to get in. For all we care, keep it closed. For all the great members you could have coming in, it’s your loss.

It is absolutely absurd. Did they think this wouldn’t happen? this level of stupidity is beyond my comprehension I mean, god is this tracker run by fucking 14 year olds?? It HAS to be, its absolutely HAS to be run by kids.

Im sorry, I cant help myself from double posting. I sit here and read this and my jaw drops in awe of the newly achieved level of ignorance and stupidity. It is ridiculous that they would think this wouldn’t happen. If you opt for opening your tracker is because _all_ of the staff have overseen the situation and thought ahead, I take this action as an absolute insult to the people that had their hopes up. It is beyond my comprehension how staff can act in such a childish way. OF COURSE people will want to trade and make some cash, I mean for crying out loud are you mentally impaired?? You should give yourselves a pat on the back staff people, you have seriously proven to be golden (intellect wise naturally).

Their tracker their decision … heh its a let down for all the HD fanboys around.Better luck next time :P.It is in times like this I love my ISP,Because it is crap,I cant dream big :P.(Grapes which the fox cant get are sour) :D.Hope HDbits open invites for deserving members. There is no use in taking drastic measures because trades can be stopped from getting in whatever the rules that is implemented they can only be banned. Its a fact and deal with it.
05 • LOLnoobs Says: 19.12.09 at 12:32 am
Clearly a terrible decision on the part of their staff. What on earth did they expect to happen when announcing the opening a week in advance, giving traders and sellers plenty of time to mobilize?
All they’ve done is prevent good members from joining, as the traders and sellers who are CLEARLY ALREADY THERE can still function just fine, as that’s the only way to join the site unless you’re best buds with a staff member there.
Plenty of reasonable suggestions have been made, whether it’s p2invite, invite applications that are staff moderated, random openings occasionally to deter trading (Waffles back when invites were much more sporadic), etc. But it’s quite clear that the staff there are only concerned with how “1337″ their site is.
Every site has to deal with the exact same issues they do. And I’m not aware of any large site with such a restrictive policy on invites.
Many people have expressed the idea that this was probably a not-so-subtle plot to weed out a few more traders and sellers from their sites, while collectively laughing at the rest of the torrenting world. I wouldn’t hesitate to believe it for a second, especially since:
A) They’ve shown no desire to open invites in the past.
B) They gave huge advance notice
C) They clearly had to expect that allowing invites would increase trading and selling.
The only reason invites were traded and sold with such ferocity over the last two days is because there is NO OTHER WAY TO GET IN!

This blog post seems to suggest that hdbits wants new members, but do they really want new members? I heard recently that hdbits is thriving and experiencing a big peering activity.

The ones selling the invites is already members. They have to be if they have something to sell. So I don’t get why the cancelled Monday because the sellers are not going to be caught by closing down but by investigation.
They should have opened up and then told everyone. If they did that this wouldn’t have been an issue.
011 • HEY Says: 19.12.09 at 1:59 am
@OLEG So why did they announced the opening of invites if they don’t need new members ?
I can’t understand that…
012 • Oleg Says: 19.12.09 at 2:21 am
Maybe for 2 things:
1. They simply wanted to explore the human nature; they wanted to know if there are too many scumbags that are still left on their site who would try to sell invites.
2. They wanted to make a Christmas gift for the people who really wanted to get on hdbits; however, human nature proved itself to be so corrupt that they cancelled their decision.

This isn’t stupid, if dickheads didn’t take advantage of our system then we wouldn’t have this problem, HDBits is the best community run the best way possible but yet you still can’t trust anyone.
It’s not really about selling invites, it’s about people not deserving to be apart of a great community as they only abuse the system.
I for one am happy they have shut the invites down again.
I’m unhappy my friend can’t get in but much rather that then to have the site ruined.
016 • YourMom Says: 19.12.09 at 2:29 am
Well written post sharky, especially the last bit. Kind of ridiculous for them to think that somehow this wouldn’t have happened. They should either just stay closed off forever or start a pay to invite system as on some of the other high end trackers. It’s the only way to have some control on your userbase and sellers/traders. Their current (pseudo)effort to get more people in was completely retarded and a total joke.
I feel sorry for both the serious, dedicated torrenters who got their hopes up about getting into HDBits as well as some of the HDBits userbase who were generous enough to offer invites to their buddies or powerusers on certain trackers.
017 • Eric Says: 19.12.09 at 2:37 am

keep the invites closed for all times as trade is not going to stop at anytime
if u are giving invites then u have to take chances, no one can be 100 % sure during invite giveaway.
even your best friend may change with time.
so staff at hdbits.org u need to keep this in mind.
staff at hdbits.org the site is your and u are the king do whatever u thing is right,
but remember even when onik and sct has gone down nothing has changed their are alternatives and people find one or the other way
in this big world no one needs anyone.

028 • yeehaw Says: 19.12.09 at 5:14 am
I like how the invite system revolves entirely around speculation.
Assuming I were a troll, I could keep invites closed indefinitely by simply trying to sell invites every time this sort of thing happened, whether I had them or not. Its pretty funny how a very small handful of people have complete control over the invite flow. They wouldnt even have to actually have invites to keep them closed. Just pretend you have invites for sale, and bam! Staff bows to your wishes and shuts it down.
Kind of like the stories about guys that rob banks with a pieces of paper that say they have guns. This is a troll’s greatest dream - ability to make hundreds or thousands of people pissed off with completely empty threats lol.

040 • dont. Says: 19.12.09 at 10:48 am
@blargityblarg You are missing the point. The point is they are backing out for something they _already knew_ would happen. It is very, very stupid to think that out of thousands of people wanting to get in *no one* would want to trade or sell invites. Knowing this is unavoidable, they should have never said anything in the first place. I am not against hdbits never being open again, I’m against giving people false hope and then backing out for something EVERYBODY knew would happen. So there’s literally 2 ways to interpret this, either they were only testing peoples reaction (which I think is a slap to the face and very insulting) or they are the stupidest humans on earth. Period.

Personally, I was offered an invite from a GOOD member of HDbits who knew that I was a die hard HD freak, and yeah, I’m kinda sad that I cant get in, and the people who are selling them, I’d like to formally thank each and every one of them for fucking things up for everyone else, but… having said that, HDbits respects their privacy, they just want good users, and if people are just gonna buy their way in, then shit…. this happens.
Count this as a formal “Fuck You!” to all sellers and traders, and a big thumbs up for HDbits having the balls.

044 • clitcommander Says: 19.12.09 at 11:17 am
i think HDBits is getting too arrogant by doing these sort of things to make people disappointed and angry. yes it is just a tracker and there are more important things in life, but the staff actions reflect their arrogance and ignorance - it shows (a) that the HDBits staff don’t trust their own members to invite responsibly, so how will the members feel? (b) HDBits knows that this news has already spread throughout the torrenting world and raised hopes of many many people who are good proper torrenters, yet they make the biggest fool out of everyone who still had faith or belief in joining HDBits. i will not be surprised if this matter turns many good people off joining the site forever. there are other good HD sites around who don’t treat people like this. remember nobody likes to be treated like shit. (c) if HDBits ever find a way to shut out the bad apples 100%, please do share this strategy with the police forces around the world so we can live in a utopian world, with no crime and no cheaters anywhere. unfortunately utopia and 100% free of sellers/traders is a fantasy. by letting a few people who sell/trade to command the staff actions is just like paying ransom to hijackers; once you do it, you will just create more hijackers because they know you will cave in to their actions everytime.
the common argument is that HDBits don’t need new members and is fine on its own. well this reminds me of the phrase “pride goes before the fall”. if HDBits staff are so arrogant that they think everything will be fine with the status quo, they are deluding themselves and leading the tracker down the same path as that taken by the dinosaurs - to extinction.
HDBits’s strengths lie in full blu ray rips, internal encoders & torrent retention. other HD sites are already fast catching up on these 3 aspects and will collectively overtake HDBits soon. sure no single HD site will probably overtake HDBits atm, but having a few HD sites now will more than overlap HDBits’s contents. besides their internal encoders are no longer as “unique” as before. there are many other top encoders (EuReKA, WiKi, HiDt, FoRM etc) nowadays who encode better than CtrlHD, ESiR etc.
so the question is whether HDBits want to remain a closed shop and die slowly overtime from incest, while the rest of the HD world overtake them; or do they want to change their way of thinking and tap the general goodwill that people still have for HDBits and make their tracker better.
045 • redthehat Says: 19.12.09 at 11:19 am
And on a personal note Sharky, I dont think that you have a right to accuse them for shit for closing invites. If this kind of crap is heavily publicized, then shit is going to hit the fan. Yeah, I too blame blogs for publicizing this so much, you think that FIle Sharing is something to go all out on and promote? Shit, how to we keep these communities secure, it sure as hell aint about promoting open invitations so all kinds of people can get in. Let me ask you, do you remember the last time that **** opened their invite system? That’s right, thought not.
A pay to invite system aint the key, and it never will be. Take a leaf from several other trackers. If HDbits have staff in the file sharing community who spot a potential good member, then let them offer to invite them. Pay2invite is not the solution.

what amazes me is that the people complaining that invites were cancelled would have nothing to complain about if no one had tried selling invites in the first place. it wasnt an inevitability because the few that CHOSE to sell them could have just as easily chosen not to.
ive been a member for quite some time. since joining i have never seen anything that would suggest they are hurting for donations; in fact as im looking on the site now i cant even find a way to donate. they are also less than 2600 members short of their user cap, a limit which they do not increase. the last few times they hit the cap, staff deleted inactive accounts.
stop whining, and accept the fact that some sites arent at the mercy of bottomfeeders who actually try to profit from inviting people to a website.

oh boo hoo Johnny Bravo. Build a bridge and get over it ffs. So what, you didnt get invited, neither did I, and am I kicking shit over this? I dont give a shit. Woudl be nice to be a member, but fuck man… its an invite to a HD site, which there are plenty of them around, just so happens that everyone thinks that becuase its hard to get into at tracker, that suddenly, they “need” to be a member, then comes the tales of woe… fuck, get over it. Its bullshit. HDbits will open their doors when they are damn well ready to. No one but them owns the tracker, none of you are welcome (otherwise you would be in there already), you dont write the fucking rules. If you cant get in, then too fucking bad. Get over it, everyone, quick your fuckig whining!

well redthehat me thinks you have sucked enough HDBits cock for this thread. please go somewhere else to act tough (while begging to be noticed by HDBits staff who might think that your defending them is worthy of an invite)
this is a free country; if you can’t take people’s whining just close your web browser lol nobody’s forcing you to read them

Solution:
Give users their invites back with the warning that HDBits staff will be scouring the depths of the internets searching for sellers, purchasing invites, and giving motha’ fuckas the banhammer. An influx of new users will no doubt bring in extra donations so use the 1st month’s extra money to buy invites and ban the sellers. There were only a few abusers in the first place and this will deter most of them. The rest will just get banned. And because there were only a few abusers this really shouldn’t be too expensive to pull off. Now, you get a bunch of awesome new users (and donations) and get rid of the fuck-bag sellers. Easy enough! I’m ready, open it up!

I completely agree with the pay to leech scheme, let us in and make the sellers donate!

HDBits staff must have thought their userbase to be traders/sellers free…Guess again !
FTN SCC PtN, hell, all trackers are full of these scumbags invite/account traders/sellers, just check the trade forums and you’ll see that even FTWR and ScT were full of them just a few days before their fall.
FTN is supposed to be such a 1337 place… how many accounts trades and sells have I seen? I can’t even recall
We HAVE TO find another way to get rid of them, for good, because until now…everything that was done against them didn’t work, well it worked a little, but not enough to start a new invites round.
Just the fact that it’s posted here at filesharfreak shouldn’t happen, it prooves how lame their security is, along with all other tracker’s.
Sys-ops, staff, admins, coders, you have to work on something else, or if we don’t get rid of the bad apples all the good trackers are bound to become rotten to the bone.

They should just open free registration for a while and that’s it. Good users will stay in and bad ones will get banned.
But no matter what way you let new users in, there will always be account selling, even if you don’t invite anyone, then users just sell their active accounts. Might as well close whole site and ban all users.
