Waffles’ Haiti Donation Drive a Smashing Success
January 20, 10 by sharky 6,291 views
Waffles.fm (and their generous members) has long been known as a private tracker with a big heart when it comes to donation drives - whether it be their participation in the annual Toys For Tots program, or charity food / book drives. Yesterday, Waffles announced a new donation promo to support Haiti, and by the look of things - it’s on pace to easily eclipse any and all records for donation drives thus far in Waffles’ history. Thus far more than 1,500 Wafflers have now participated, bringing in an estimated $75,000 (USD) for Haitian relief - and the numbers are growing fast.
Updates (March 19th): This has now ended. Waffles raised $84,012 | TehConnection - $6,353 | Wunza - $390
* Current stats as reported in irc.p2p-network.net #waffles.fm-haiti (hotlink here).

By now, you’re aware of the devastation and chaos that has befallen Haiti. The stories and photos are heartbreaking, to say the least.
Although we had planned on running a charity food drive during February, we felt it would be a good idea to hold one now, in light of the recent events. According to CNN, money is the most sought after donation.
What’s in it for you?
250 points for each dollar donated.
Points will be awarded as I see the proof of donations in the thread, same as the toydrive.
Where can I donate?
HERE is a comprehensive list of places accepting donations.
* If you are in the US, we strongly recommend Americares for their exemplary ratings on Charity Navigator.
* Outside of the US, your local red cross and/or World Food Programme are both good options.
Note that whatever charity you choose, you will be awarded points.
How do I provide proof?
You will need to provide a screenshot of your donation receipt in this thread.
During our last charity drive we invited other trackers to participate. We’d like to invite any and all tracker staff to join us in this relief effort.
Thank you, Wafflers.
Please ask any questions in the announcement discussion thread, or on IRC at irc.p2p-network.net #waffles.fm-haiti
While the above announcement doesn’t indicate when the donation drive is slated to end, staff have told FSF that it will go on for at least another week, and probably longer. Check back on Waffles’ homepage for news updates.
Late Edit — In response to the misguided reader who left a comment below: These are not donations to Waffles; these are donations that have been sent to charities to assist Haiti. Waffles is not involved whatsoever in the handling of funds, nor can members donate to Waffles to have the monies redirected to a specific charity. In short, Waffles is not directly involved. Members simply provide a screenshot of an e-Receipt from a donation made to any charity (that has a disaster relief fund program set up for Haiti).
Now, back to the points. 250 points are awarded for each US dollar donated. Wafflers already know how difficult it is to amass points, so for those who are already thinking about donating to the Haitian cause - why not do it through Waffles? Also, it’s retroactive - which means if you donated days ago it will still be accepted.
Due to the amazing amount of points being offered, hopefully Wafflers can expect to see "24-hour sitewide freeleeches" in the future (there’s already been one as a result of this particular drive so far). Stay tuned…
TehConnection Haiti Drive:
Waffles isn’t the only tracker determined to help Haiti - TehConnection.eu is also currently running a donation drive. So far about $2,500 has been raised by TehConnection members - great job everyone! Recent news from TC:
Last year we supported Waffles in their quest to raise the number of donations to Toys For Tots, and now we’re back again to help support them with another cause; Raising aid for the people of Haiti.
What’s in it for you?
500MB upload credit for every dollar donated, after proof has been provided to this thread.
This is a good cause to help out people that have been devastated by this disaster. If you can swing it, please consider donating, it makes a world of difference.
Thanks to everyone who considers! Discussion thread is available here: link.
/* TC Team */
Wunza.ws, Offering Points for Donations:
Wunza.ws is also offering 1,000 points for every 5 dollars donated to charities supporting Haiti - see forum thread here (Update: 02/15/10 - thread has now been trashed).

Great, now we have to reinvent industry propaganda.
Thanks a lot.

The comments above are proof there are lots of kids around… Haiti needs food, medics and medications, things that help now and can actually be delivered to the needing people. As for the money… have you ignorants ever heard of the World Bank? It’s going to digg an hole in the public debt the earthquake will look like a joke. The money you donate will most likely found burocracy or so called “reconstruction” (foreign companies getting the jump).
PS: I’m italian, we “deal with” earthquakes since North America was full of buffalos.

The 2 BIG Questions are ??
Question 1 )
No disrespect to Waffles what so ever !
How will the members know that the money indeed gonna be donated to Haiti ?
and if so, the people / vitctims of the earthquake will never receive it or see any dime of it,
corrupt goverment, now ask yourself that, good example the big disaster in Tsunami 30% of the money they raised they did receive it, but what the hell happened to the other “70% ” !!
Question 2 )
What are the chances that the Admin / Staff will split the money among them !
and please don’t talk about they receive any proof or something else, so the member can see for themselves, everything nowadays is easy to fake by everything I mean everything !
just my 2 cents on this subject !

@SCAM
You obviously didn’t read this article. If you did you would have seen the post from Waffles’ page, which makes it clear that Waffles is not taking any money. They are simply encouraging their users to donate to organizations from this list:
http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact/.
And say what you will, but I believe these are noble organizations, with good intentions. I made my personal contribution to Doctors Without Borders.
012 • RAWR Says: 21.01.10 at 2:41 pm
Also, your claim about only %30 of donations going to the Tsunami disaster is completely misleading (I won’t waste more time or space going into more detail). However, for those who are concerned about charity bureaucracies and inefficiencies, there are several sites that rank charities based on their effectiveness. You can also see operating/administrative costs, annual monetary intake, size/scope of the organization, etc.

Sorry ol’ chap, but waffles has nipped down the offy for some surprise maintenance. Why not help yourself to a spot of tea in the meantime?
015 • ddl0 Says: 21.01.10 at 8:20 pm
@ SCAM: maybe youre the sort of person who would think of doing such a thing.
Actually, to be fair: Oxfam, one of the leading charities in the world do the same thing, 1 cent in every dollar is what actually gets through to actually help those in need. Due to bullshit “processing” costs and whatnot 99% of the money is actually filling their pockets while only 1% is used to help these people in need, Its sick.
Its great that waffles have raised this generous amount, however they really need to choose the charities they send it to wisely.
016 • Not A Moron Says: 21.01.10 at 9:21 pm
Because it appears that a lot of you are incapable of reading the actual post I will explain how this works.
Step 1. You donate to any charity you want to support Haiti
Step 2. You submit a screen shot of your payment confirmation to Waffles
Step 3. They credit you 250 * (Amount Donated) points.
At no point in this transaction is Waffles handling a single dime of donation money.
017 • no scam Says: 21.01.10 at 9:23 pm
You ignorant knuckle-draggers are how rumors get started. Waffles is handling NO MONEY from this drive.
God, some people.
018 • RAWR Says: 22.01.10 at 4:38 am
@DDLO
You have NO idea what you’re talking about! Oxfam’s spending: 80% programs, 14% Fund raising, 6% administrative. The misinformation coming from people on this post is disgusting. Do some fucking research before you spread lies. Where do you people get your facts? Seriously!

@Scam
You’re a moron, read before you make a fool of yourself.
No one is sending donation money through waffles. You’re an absolute fool. Next time provide real facts, evidence to back up and support your claims rather than spewing out nonsense.
@Anonimo
So far, they have donated to charities with strong reputations who specialize in this sort of thing, however I would only suggest people to donate through these organizations rather than your local store; Walmart, McDonalds, and various Corporations whom are very likely to take money for themselves while donating a small portion of their goods, some of them use the money they receive to replenish more than what they send out. That’s why they are called corporations, and “NOT” Organizations. I wouldn’t blame anyone in mistrusting their Government since they have very less credibility nowadays. If you’re going to donate to a charity you never heard of before, look well into their reputations. It would be naive to believe no one would be capable of doing such a thing as exploiting a tragedy for opportunity, such as scams created to look like donation sites or emails similar to the typical Nigerian Scams.
If you are in doubt, look that their reputation at the BBB.

I would like to add that this is what the pirate community is made up of, people who give to those who don’t have anything, who can’t provide for themselves. Not to mention that a lot of those who make up for the downloading communities are in fact people who have no money are are unable to purchase what is far from their own reach, and some of them try their best to help out others in their situation by giving as much as they can, ($1). We would rather send money to those who really need it, rather than give it to those who are greedy and always exploiting the unfortunate. We all know who they are, and for those who don’t, it’s The Music and Movie Industry. They only know one word, money.
