Unzbin - a New (Tiny) Usenet NZB Application

A common misconception about Usenet is that it’s an overly complicated filesharing protocol with a high learning curve. Although NZB technology has simplified the Usenet experience considerably, it’s true that many newsreaders are painfully sophisticated. Unzbin is a brand new NZB-only client specifically designed to be the easiest Usenet downloader of all. Not only is Unzbin simple to use, but it also comes loaded with some amazing features.

Unzbin requires .NET Framework 2.0

Unzbin Features:

Check out the Unzbin homepage for a complete list of features. Features include:

  • • 100% free to use, no spyware/adware
  • • Multiple simultaneous downloads
  • • Full Yenc, UUencode and base64 support
  • • Automatic file verification, repair and unpacking
  • • SSL support
  • • Unique HeapDisQ technology; super fast decoding algorithms
  • • Tiny footprint (low CPU and RAM), installer is just 356 KB
  • • Offers a portable version - just 80 KB
  • • Built-in search, which links to BinSearch.info

Simplistic Settings:

When running Unzbin for the first time, you’ll be prompted to enter your Usenet account details into the program. Most of the options below don’t need further clarification; these areas are pretty much self-explanatory. By default, the automated processes are already enabled (see below).

  • Validate / repair — This allows Unzbin to utilize the PAR/PAR2 files to repair and validate the archives.
  • Unpack — This option enables Unzbin to unrar (extract) the archives after the validation & repair process.
  • Prune — When enabled, the “Prune” feature will delete all of the source RARs (and PAR/PAR2 files) after a successful extraction.

Unzbin’s Three Tabs…

Connections — Displays the status of your Usenet account connections.

Parts — This shows the parts within the NZB file; including subject/thread name, source (name) of newsgroup, original poster, segments, age & size of posts, and status (decoded / decoding / downloading).

Console — This is the log file for Unzbin. All processes are reported here including unpack & validation results, user paths and filenames etc.

Unzbin is Automated:

Notable key features that make this an outstanding application: fully automated processes for decoding, validating, repairing & unpacking. Simply import an *.NZB file, and Unzbin will download all the files (including the PARs). Once all the files have been successfully downloaded, Unzbin will repair the files (if necessary) and decode them, and also unpack/extract the RARs. Lastly, these RAR & PAR files are then automatically deleted - leaving you with a folder containing the extracted goodies. What could be easier than than?

Unzbin is super fast and very reliable, lightweight and yet full-featured. This amazing piece of software is free from clutter with a clean layout and an easy to use interface. What are you waiting for? Grab yourself a Usenet account and join a NZB community (we like Merlins Portal), and let Unzbin do the work for you!

This would’ve been great is NZB sites weren’t currently being sued, shut down and filtered.

Tons of copyright material on a nice fat server and blatantly making money off it=FAIL.

  27. mackditty Says:

HELLANZB KILLS SABNZBD!!!! ownz it hard and this! to anyone thinking usenet is dead, youre an idiot. its been alive since the internet, and never faded or been a trend. who doesnt like uploading one file and millions able to grab? who doesnt like to grab at a speed as fast as their little modems heart can handle?

if you think usenet is dead then go to a torrent site, if youre like me, and use it to your advantage (download from usenet, upload to best private trackers 4TW) then youre a real american hero

  28. BinaryNewsHowTo Says:

This is cool, but hellanzb and SABnazb+ both kick it’s ass.

Hello, newsgroup users. I don’t want to seem like a troll or anything, but I’m *relatively* new to the internet (only online for a few years) and a little bit puzzled. Could someone tell me: apart from faster downloading times (which is just a matter of being patient), is there any actual, useful reason for paying out for these NZB newsgroup things? At the moment, I haven’t heard anything which would suggest a significant advantage over something like utorrent. Thanks.

  37. Anon Says:

    @DG100

    Significant advantage? Well let’s see.

    1. My astraweb connection maxes out my download, and usually my upload. That’s 4.3MB a second for me. I download from x264.me, and other private torrent sites, and I’m lucky if I get 400KB.

    2. No fucking ratio keeping. I download, I delete. I download, I delete. Fucking uploading back, killing my HD one more KB at a time.

    3. I do upload to usenet though. And it’s safer than uploading on torrents. Only my isp and server can see me. But with ssl, only my server can see me (though I’m sure my isp can break that if they wanted to, but why would they want to?). And my server, well they’re hardly going to go snitching on their users, are they?

    4. Everything that I’ve been downloading off of trackers, and good trackers too (x264, awesome-hd, various music trackers), I can get off of usenet. Now, don’t get me wrong. You may not catch that perfect 1080p version on usenet (though usually it’s there for me) that’s only on one tracker. But you will get 1080p versions.

    5. An idiot above said usenet was PTL. Yes, it is. I could justify it by saying that what I’m really am paying for is access to server space, but let’s not. It IS paying to leech. For 11 dollars a month, using astraweb, I get the fastest possible download, and fast as hell uploads (it does usually max out my symmetric fiber upload). I don’t have to worry about ratios, Nazi tracker admins, RIAA/MPA (everyone can see you on a swarm). I’m a grown man, and I don’t have time to deal with a bunch of 15 year olds. I am willing to pay a cheap price for usenet access, and damn, it’s cheap.

    6. What exactly are seedboxes, tracker donations, and broadband connections, if not Pay to Leech? And what’s so good about invite whoring? How is that in the sharing spirit, begging for invites?

    7. Usenet is great for storage too. I plan on uploading everything I have on usenet. Stuff I’ve only been keeping around because I didn’t want to delete it and lose it forever.

    8. Private trackers aren’t about sharing. They’re about elitism. I joined bitmetv before I signed up for usenet, and what the fuck is the point of that site??? It’s so fucking hard to keep a ratio on it (without a paid for seedbox), that you have people downloading PARTS of files, and nothing more, just so they can build up their ratio. Is that sharing? No, it isn’t. Sharing is when you have something you like, and you let someone else have it too. People on sites like bitmetv are forced to download stuff they DON’T WANT, just to build a ratio so they can get to the stuff they do want.

Now don’t get me wrong. Ratio-free trackers are great and I support them. And some sites are easy to keep ratios on, like thebox. But fuck sites like bitmetv which only make it harder to share.
